Discover Iveragh's Geology

Group of people standing on a hill on Valentia Island looking across the bay

Have you ever wondered how the hills, valleys, islands and rocky landscapes of Iveragh came to be? Did you know that during the Earth’s history, Iveragh has been part of an inland desert, has been compressed into a vast mountain belt, has seen violent volcanic explosions, extreme flooding events, the emergence of the first animals to ever walk on land and has been carved by powerful glaciers?

If you’d like to learn about the fascinating origins of Iveragh, its geological history and the processes that continue to mould and shape its landscapes, join us for one of our weekend talk and field trip sessions this winter.

Each session will comprise of a 2 hour in-person evening talk followed by a day trip to see some of the geological features that make Iveragh special.

These events will be delivered by Dr Pat Meere, a senior lecturer in geology at University College Cork and Ms Anna Collyer, a Knowledge Gatherer for the LIVE project who will make all the information as accessible and engaging as possible.
